I plan to submit some of the papers to some conferences and see whether I can present my work there or not. This part is the most important part of my project and it’s the key to my research. After getting feedback from Jodi and Yuanxi, I revised the design document again with more details and critical thinking.</p> <h2 id="revision-of-poster">Revision of Poster</h2> <p>Also, I revised my poster again to make it ready to print. The contents of the poster are mostly the repetition of my design document. And I figure out some of the points to design the web app. Also, this is my first time writing a technology stack part and I tried to write one. I did some research about that and ask some of my friends who are also CS majors to learn from them. The design part of the project is one of the most difficult parts. I’ll get the feedback and revise it again.</p> <h2 id="revision-of-poster">Revision of Poster</h2> <p>According to the feedback of lab members and Professor Jodi, I revise the poster a little bit and make t look nicer.</p> <h2 id="revision-of-analysis-report-of-biblioshiny">Revision of analysis report of Biblioshiny</h2> <p>A few days ago, I come up with the idea that one of the ways I can design this web app is to add an additional function to Biblioshiny to show the funder information. But now I found an important contradiction in the idea. The difference is that Biblioshiny needs an input file generated from the database website. However, our web application requires us to find the data information from different databases, so if we add an additional function to Biblioshiny, the web app will be limited but it can work. So, this is one of my concerns for now. I talked with Professor Jodi about this and she encourages me to continue to do this idea instead of just giving up. I’ll continue to figure this out.</p>

I can also use Shiny environment in my web app. I’m still in the process of designing it and hopefully, I can come up with a good idea to design it.</p> <h2 id="design-document">Design Document</h2> <p>The design document is a key part of my project and my main task is to come up with a good design plan for the project. So far, I have 3 ideas to design it. The first one is to create a new database to store the funding information, but it’s maybe too large to do that. Another one is to use Shiny environment and Crossref to retrieve data. Also, I’m thinking about whether I can add an additional function to Biblioshiny because its original structure is good, but we are not sure whether they accept that.</p> <h2 id="lab-presentation">Lab Presentation</h2> <p>Other than the design and Biblioshiny, I did a lab presentation to present my work to people in the lab on Friday. I like the presentation part of my project because it is a good idea to find out my problems and get some potential solutions. I definitely got something helpful for my project.</p>

I went to University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign one day earlier and clean up the room pf my new apartment here. Although I didn’t know anything here, I feel this city is a great city and I like the city vibe.</p> <p>The first day of the research is impressive. The student in the lab lead me and another student walk around the campus and get familar with the resource on campus. The school is a huge school and there are a lot of buildings and resources. I know a lot of people in Information Science department and learn about their research project. We also went to the downtown to have luch together and talk about the school and research. There are a lot of information at the first day, because the school is new for me. I really appreciate my mentor and the phd student in her lab spent their time taking us to get familar with the campus and greeting people.</p> <p>We also did a campus tour of the Engineering school at the beginning of the second day. We know many great study and working places on campus and we can go there sometime later to work on our project, which is quiet. Also, we read three readings, one is the description of our research project and the other one is a whole research plan of our mentor with an article about the background knowledge of the topic of the big project. It introduces the history and future route of research synthesis. Research synthesis means combining the results of multiple primary research studies to test the same conceptual hypothesis. The article emphasizes the importance of doing research synthesis, which is often ignored by people. Another one is a general research planning about the research synthesis by using network analysis. After reading this, I gain more understanding about my research project: the purpose of it, how does it work for the whole project, and so on. I really enjoy reading this article and this project and I think it’s really helpful after we finish it.</p> <p>In the rest of the week, I made a detailed weekly event planning for my project. Also, I explore and do research about a similar web app and learn about it design and functions for my project with the similarities and difference. I read the description of it and understand what it is. I think this app inspires me a lot about the designing of my web app development and give me a general picture about what it’s like and what should I do with my project. Also, I try try to understand the functions and design of it by reading its tutorial and online resources. Its tutorial also gives me an idea of the tutorial of my web app. For next week, I’ll review some knowledges I will use in this project and also learn about the previous work about this project to prepare well before I really start to do it.</p>
